Chemotherapy patients often talk about the emotional impact of hair loss during treatment. But many don’t expect the physical effects, such as trying to stay warm when their heads are uncovered. Treatments, infections, and the cancer itself often play a role in altering body temperature. Add in hair loss caused by chemotherapy, medically known as alopecia, and you might be looking for ways to cover it up. Many patients have found that the headscarf helps provide comfort and style.

To help, Diana Melton, a licensed stylist and esthetician at The Tulsa Hospital, offers tips on stylish, comfortable, and easy-to-learn ways to tie and wear the hijab. “Your scalp often becomes very sensitive when hair is lost due to chemotherapy,” she says. “It can feel like a sunburn or a very tight ponytail. Try applying some aloe vera on your scalp and then tie it with a cotton, bamboo or silk scarf. The hijab feels cool and cozy while keeping it warm.”

Milton says a wig will also help keep your head covered and warm, but sometimes wigs can get really hot. If you are looking for something that can be tied and worn around the house, hijab is a popular choice. Plus, says Milton, you can wear it in a variety of ways, using different styles.
